Nadiem Amiri has stopped short of committing his long-term future to Mainz 05, insisting he does not want to make promises he cannot guarantee.
Speaking to kicker, the Germany international was asked whether he could assure supporters that he would remain at the club beyond this summer. Rather than giving a definitive answer, Amiri explained that he wanted to avoid raising false expectations.
According to the report, the midfielder stressed that he "doesn't want to disappoint the fans" by making a public commitment that circumstances could later force him to break.
Amiri did however, stress that he “feels comfortable” at Mainz and is only focused on the club right now. Reports linking him to RB Leipzig did not disturb Amiri or Mainz - there simply is no concrete offer.
Amiri remains an important figure at Mainz and is under contract, but his performances over the past year have attracted interest from other clubs. While he did not hint at an imminent departure, his comments leave the door open to a future move should the right opportunity arise.
That reminds fans of the beginning of last season, where Amiri's comments about his future sounded very similar. There are seemingly no doubts, that the playmaker will give his all for Mainz - as long as he is under contract. If the right offer comes, Amiri could be on his way out - rather quickly.
