Five German players will go into Thursday's UEFA Nations League first leg against Italy knowing that if they pick up a yellow card they will be suspended for the return leg in Germany on Sunday.

In fact, that applies to almost the entire German defence, with captain Joshua Kimmich, Antonio Rüdiger, David Raum, Nico Schlotterbeck and Robert Andrich all just one yellow card away from suspension.

According to UEFA's regulations for the Nations League, a player receives a one-match suspension for every two yellow cards.

For the finals, cautions that have not led to suspensions and pending yellow-card suspensions will expire once the quarter-finals have been played.

The first leg will be kicked off at San Siro in Milan on Thursday at 20:45 CET.
