The 21-year-old spent time at Fortuna Düsseldorf and Köln academies before signing his first professional contract with the latter in 2020. But he left Billy Goats without making an appearance for the first team.

His fortunes changed in his first full season at Nürnberg, predominantly playing as a right-sided midfielder. And, despite two red cards and ten cautions last season, the shift to central midfield worked wonders for him.

Under Miroslav Klose, he even took an advanced role in Der Club’s midfield this season. He already scored a personal best three 2. Bundesliga goals. Nürnberg climbed to 10th in the standings after three wins from the last four matches.

Castrop’s future club also picked momentum in Bundesliga following back-to-back. According to Transfermarkt, Gladbach will pay €4.5 million for the services of the young midfielder as he puts pen to paper on a deal until 2029. Earlier this week, Gladbach similarly signed Indonesian center-back Kevin Diks for next season.
