TSG Hoffenheim took a big step towards European football this afternoon with a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen – a result which delighted Christian Ilzer.

“We knew that a top team was visiting us and that it would be a big challenge. But we were rewarded early for a strong start. We didn't make enough of our good opportunities; we should have scored a second goal.

"Towards the end, we had to defend well in our block, but that's part of the game against a team like this. The lads put in a lot of effort, so I'm full of praise for them. It's important for us to take the next step.

“We wanted to show, to solidify our claim, that we can beat a team like this. With this victory, we've shown that we deserve our high position in the standings,” the Sinsheimers coach said.

The game was ultimately settled by a wonderful – and perhaps fortunate – freekick goal from Wouter Burger. He expressed his happiness at being the match-winner on Matchday 18.

“It was a very important win. We wanted to show that we can beat strong teams. We managed to do that, unlike in Stuttgart.

"I practiced free kicks this morning, shooting them at full speed towards the far post, but there was an element of luck involved. It was great to score that goal.

“We simply enjoy playing football as a team. We brought intensity to the pitch again today. Christian Ilzer motivates us very well; he gives clear instructions,” Burger added.
