Since leaving Borussia Dortmund for West Ham United in 2024, Niclas Füllkrug has struggled with recurring muscular injuries.
However, after returning to Germany on loan to Werder Bremen in the summer, the 33-year-old has managed to stay injury-free – helping him hit a purple patch of seven goals in seven appearances.
As Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz explains, Füllkrug has adopted a cautious approach to training, which has paid off so far.
“Niclas has become more experienced. He knows exactly what is good for his body – and what isn’t,” Fritz told Sport Bild.
According to the German outlet, Füllkrug is allowed to ease off during training to manage his workload and minimise the risk of injury.
The 33-year-old also pays close attention to every detail of his preparation and recovery, receiving regular treatment from Werder’s medical department.
That does not mean Füllkrug lacks commitment, though, with one example being his habit of staying on the pitch after training sessions to work on his finishing.
“The way Niclas leads by example, with the mindset of wanting more and taking that extra step, not just on the pitch but in training as well, is impressive,” Fritz said.
Füllkrug will be looking to continue his impressive form in front of goal this weekend when Werder travel to Mainz.
