League leaders FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund face teams from the top half of the table on matchday 9 of the Bundesliga, which will start with a clash of former giants.
Former giants meet in relegation six-pointer
“Der Klassiker” might be the biggest fixture in the Bundesliga right now, but Borussia Mönchengladbach and Hamburger SV were FC Bayern's main rivals in the 1970s and early 1980s, respectively. The two historic clubs will commence matchday 9 action on Friday as the cellar-dwellers target back-to-back away victories.
For HSV, the aim is to end a three-game losing streak in all competitions after they won three games on the trot prior to that. Alexander Blessin's men collected their first four points of the season against Stuttgart and Paderborn. Both head-to-head fixtures ended in goalless draws in HSV'S long-awaited return to Bundesliga last term.
Kane to end mini-goal drought in Mainz?
Ballon d'Or winner Harry Kane already reached 10 goals in all competitions, but he's yet to find the target since lifting the coveted award in London. The 33-year-old also hit the headlines this week as FC Bayern finally confirmed his new deal until 2029.
As Bayern continue to operate without the head coach Vincent Kompany, the England captain targets his first non-penalty goal since matchday 6 against RB Leipzig. Kane scored the winner when Bayern came from 3-0 down to return home with three points from their last Mewa Arena trip.
Urs Fischer's side lost three home games in a row, with their opening matchday goalless draw against newly-promoted Paderborn still their only point in front of their supporters. However, they topped the away standings ahead of the Rekordmeister.
Dortmund test for debutants Elvesberg
While the defending champions target a third successive away victory in all competitions, Borussia Dortmund will play against Elversberg for the first time in their history. Niko Kovač's men earned a hard-fought point at Bayern last week as the league leaders are still tied on 18 points.
As for the visitors, they managed to put their DFB-Pokal exit behind them with a stunning 4-1 victory over Mainz. Vincent Wagner's side will hope to replicate their performance that forced Bayern to dig deep to leave Kaiserlinde with three points. USMNT international Cole Campbell, who scored his second Bundesliga goal last week, relishes his return to Westfalenstadion after joining Elversberg from Dortmund on a permanent transfer in the summer.
Undav and Füllkrug reunion in Topspiel clash
Deniz Undav and Niclas Füllkrug were Germany teammates for a brief period of time until Julian Nagelsmann gave up on the latter following his struggles at West Ham United. However, it was indeed the 33-year-old who made Jürgen Klopp's squad for November games after scoring in seven consecutive Bundesliga games for Werder Bremen.
Meanwhile, Undav is yet to score a league goal in a season he replaced Atakan Karazor as Stuttgart's captain. The change of the strikers' fortunes could decide Saturday's clash between Sebastian Hoeneß's inconsistent side and the rejuvenated Bremen outfit.
Köln target to complete Rhine derby double
Less than a month after Said El Mala’s stunner saved René Wagner's job with a narrow win over Rhine derby rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach, Köln will host another team from the region as Bayer Leverkusen hope to avoid a third defeat in the space of a week.
Carles Martinez's men lost three of their last four games in all competitions after a narrow home defeat to Marseille on Thursday. Both teams did score five in the second round of the DFB-Pokal, but the hosts would be confident after Malek El Mala's dream debut last week. Köln are yet to lose a game at RheinEnergieStadion this season.
