Kompany discusses how Bayern “redeemed themselves” despite “mentally slow start”

Lennart Karl and Harry Kane were on target for Bayern, while Maurice Krattenmacher equalized for Elversberg. The record champions responded particularly well after the hosts drew level.

Speaking to DAZN after the match, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany reflected on his side’s performance and admitted that the first half was far from satisfactory and did not meet the standards expected of the record champions.

“It felt like we had a slightly harder time getting into the game today. In the last two matches, we had some great chances early on, but then failed to convert one of them. Then there are phases where you just need a little time to adjust. Today, for example, we weren’t as dominant from the start as we were at times against Schalke and Bodø,” explained the Bayern coach.

Kompany felt his team lacked clarity and focus, particularly in the opening stages. “We simply weren’t there at the beginning. They played well, they were courageous, and we weren’t as precise, even on the ball, as we usually are. If your counter-pressing isn’t intense enough, then it’s a game like this; you don’t get any gifts here. If we’re not 100% present, all games are difficult. And in the end, we redeemed ourselves,” the Belgian explained.

One of Bayern’s greatest strengths is their ability to rely on the depth of their squad, with players coming off the bench capable of making an immediate impact. However, Kompany once again stressed that his side must improve their concentration from the outset.

“We were a step too slow mentally at the beginning. That makes things difficult for ourselves,” the Bayern coach emphasized.

Bayern will now turn their attention towards Friday’s fixture, when Union Berlin visit the Allianz Arena to kick off the Bundesliga weekend.
