Germany will be without Manuel Neuer for their final World Cup warm-up friendly against the United States on Saturday.

The 40-year-old Bayern shot-stopper has not been in action since suffering a calf injury three weeks ago, and he will also miss Saturday’s match after sitting out Friday’s final training session ahead of the game.

“He is doing well. He is on the way back to full fitness. Nevertheless, we don’t want to take any risks tomorrow,” head coach Julian Nagelsmann said at a press conference on Friday.

“We want to increase the likelihood that he gets through the tournament perfectly.”

Neuer is fully expected to be back between the posts when Germany face Curaçao in their World Cup opener on June 14.

“He will be fully fit by the time of the first group match. He will join team training next week,” said Nagelsmann.

With Neuer unavailable, Oliver Baumann will be in goal on Saturday – just as he was in the 4-0 friendly win over Finland last Sunday.

In addition to Neuer, 18-year-old Bayern prodigy Lennart Karl will miss Saturday’s game after suffering a shock injury in training.
