Both striker Florian Niederlechner and midfielder Tobias Strobl had to exit Augsburg's round 11 fixture against Wolfsburg with injuries on Saturday. While it looks as if Niederlechner appears to have only suffered a minor foot contusion unrelated to his persistent ankle problems, Strobl's season is most definitely over.

"I noticed right away that something ruptured in the knee," Strobl noted in a Tuesday statement, "One always hopes that it's not so bad after all, but the MRI confirmed my suspicions."

The former Hoffenheim and Gladbach versatile midfielder officially joined the Fuggerstädter on a free after the BMG loaned him out to the Bavarian Swabians during the 2019/20 "Rück-runde". He had started four of the FCA's last five league fixtures.

With Strobl out, speculation on whether head-coach Marcus Weinzierl plans to utilize a double-six set up consisting of Germany U21 teammates Arne Maier and Niklas Dorsch will obviously ramp up.

The club's gaffer didn't seem in the mood to discuss his future tactics when commenting on the injury.

"This is, of course, bitter news for Tobias and our team," Weinzierl said on Tuesday, "It's important for us to absorb this long-term loss as a team."
