Leitl backs Asta and expresses confidence ahead of home fixture: "We can hurt Gladbach and beat them."

SpVgg Greuther Fürth head coach Stefan Leitl gave Germany U21 international Simon Asta his full backing at his Friday presser.

He also praised his team for their progress over the course of the campaign and confidently predicted that they could avenge the drubbing incurred in the reverse fixture.

After a cringe-inducing injury last weekend left SpVgg Greuther Fürth without starting right-back Marco Meyerhöfer for the rest of the year, club trainer Stefan Leitl made clear that he had full confidence that new Germany U21 international Simon Asta could take over the role.

"Simon will take over this position and do well for us," Leitl unequivocally stated at his Friday presser.

Despite the fact that relegation is a certainty at this point, Leitl struck an optimistic tone about his team's prospects against a fledgling Borussia Mönchengladbach Saturday afternoon at the Ronhof. The league's last-placed team has shown a penchant for stringing together promising streaks this season.

Another record beckons this round. After keeping clean sheets against Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt in the previous two rounds, the Kleeblätter have a chance to go three games without conceding a goal. That would constitute an uplifting record for the club.

Leitl stressed that defensive posture would remain a priority; to the point that CB Sebastian Griesbeck might even get a start just a few days removed from a bout with the flu. The SpVgg gaffer also seemed optimistic about his squad's prowess on the attack.

"We are in a position where we can hurt Gladbach and beat them," Leitl said, "We've steadily improved this season both in terms of vertical play and disciplined pressing against the ball."

Leitl's men hope to furnish a sufficient response to a 0-4 shellacking Gladbach delivered in the reverse fixture.
