Official: Mainz's Nemeth joins FC St. Pauli

FSV Main 05 central defender David Nemeth completed his switch to second division side FC St. Pauli on Thursday.
Twenty-one-year-old center back David Nemeth is headed to Hamburg after two seasons with the Rheinhessen of Germany's top footballing flight. A transfer fee for the youngster (worth an estimated €2.3 million in the latest transfermarkt listings) was not disclosed.

Nemeth made six Bundesliga and one DFB Pokal appearance for Mainz in the campaign just concluded. He did see more significant action out on loan to Austria's Sturm Graz during the 2020/21 season, making 32 appearances for the club in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Along with recently loan-out winger Paul Nebel, Nemeth filled in for FSV trainer Bo Svensson this year when COVID and injuries depleted matchday selection options. St. Pauli administrators lauded Nemth's potential in statements accompanying the signing.

"David adheres to out path of relying on players with great development potential," sporting director Andreas Bornemann noted on the club's website, "David has all the assets that we want in a central defender."

"David is still young, but he was able to consistently gain playing experience at a high level during his stint with Sturm Graz," Coach Timo Schultz added, "The fact that he's dual-footed is another plus. He can be used flexibly in the defensive center and thrives in different systems."
