VfL Wolfsburg have reportedly found their new sporting director in the form of former VfL Bochum manager Sebastian Schindzielorz. The 43-year-old, who recently stepped aside early at the league's last-placed team, will take over for current Wolfsburg player personnel chief Marcel Schäfer in February of 2023.

Schäfer himself will not be leaving the club, instead moving up to take the post of current managing director Jörg Schmadtke after the 58-year-old's current contract expires at the end of the first month of the new calendar year. Schindzielorz and Schäfer actually played together on the Wolfsburg side that won the Bundesliga title in the 2009/09 season.

Schmadtke still maintains a repoturtation as a highly competent footballing executive and will surely be headed elsewhere after his time with Wolfsburg draws to a close. The 58-year-old will nevertheless carry with him the baggage of a string of poor head-coaching decisions.

Schmadtke's fractured relationship with former trainer Oliver Glasner forced the club to find a new gaffer to coach the team after Glasner led the German Wolves to the 2021/22 Champions' League. The failed coaching regimes of Mark van Bommel and Florian Kohfeldt presently pits the club in an uneasy relationship with Niko Kovac, who has struggled to field a functional squad.
