England vs. Germany preview: Team news and predicted lineups
Here's our preview for Monday's UEFA Nations League clash between England and Germany.
Sitting third with just six points after five games, Germany can no longer qualify for the Nations League semifinals, but England are even worse off with just two points to their name.
Germany will still be without COVID-stricken Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka as well as Julian Brandt (illness). Lukas Nmecha (knee problems) and Antonio Rüdiger (suspension) will miss out this time too.
"We will need to find a way to replace Antonio, and we still need to figure out a way how we'll do that. We have a couple of options: Niklas Süle did well in his position and can be partnered with a teammate from Dortmund, Nico Schlotterbeck, because they know how to play together. Matthias Ginter and Armel Bella Kotchap can also play there," revealed Germany coach Hansi Flick at a press conference yesterday.
"I've said previously that we were done experimenting, but we do want to try out a couple of tactical changes. We want to give the players the confidence they need, and have run through our routines again."
Flick also revealed that ter Stegen is expected to be in goal again with Neuer out, but he is likely to make changes at other positions, with Jamal Musiala among those who will come into the starting line-up.
"Jamal will play tomorrow. I don't think that will come as a surprise to him. It will be a great moment for him to get to play at Wembley. He’s able to help us play our way out of trouble, reads the game well and is able to win the ball in defence. I’m happy that he plays for Germany," said Flick.
England will be boosted by John Stones' return from suspension. Aaron Ramsdale, Kieran Trippier and Ben Chilwell are among those pushing to start, with Gareth Southgate likely to make a number of changes to the team that lost 1-0 against Italy.
