FC Köln's search for defensive reinforcements, according to reports surfacing earlier in the week, led them to one of their former players. Current 1. FC Union Berlin central defender Dominique Heintz no longer plays a role in Urs Fischer's side. The 30-year-old was even loaned out to VfL Bochum for the second half of the 2022/23 campaign.

Germany's preeminent footballing publication, Kicker Magazine, reported earlier in the week that Köln were in talks with Union to re-acquire the player who kicked for them between 2015 and 2018. Kicker nevertheless reported that the two sides were far apart on the details of the arrangement, with Köln striving for a loan whilst Union wished to sell.

German transfer journalist Dominik Schneider now reports that the two clubs have worked out the details for an outright sale. Union picked up Heintz for a paltry transfer fee from Freiburg in the January 2022 transfer window. The former German youth international still maintains an estimated €1.5 million market worth in the latest transfermarkt listings.

He performed well as a makeshift left-back for Bochum last spring.
