Freiburg vs. Augsburg preview: Visitors targeting back-to-back victories

After beating Mainz 05 last weekend, Augsburg will be looking to claim consecutive victories when they face Freiburg on Sunday.

Freiburg

Freiburg began the Bundesliga campaign with consecutive victories over Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen, but they have experienced a drop-off in their last three league matches. They were thumped 5-0 in their away meeting with Stuttgart, before falling to a 4-2 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

After conceding nine goals in two league games, Freiburg may have been content with last weekend’s goalless draw against Eintracht Frankfurt. However, the draw left them without a Bundesliga win in September, while their only victory of the month took place in the Europa League against Olympiakos.

With Christian Streich’s side sitting in 10th place ahead of Sunday’s contest, they will be hoping to begin October with their third league win of the season. Freiburg will be confident of claiming all three points after winning each of their last five meetings with Augsburg, which has helped the Breisgau-Brasilianer put together a nine-game unbeaten run against Sunday’s opponents.

Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, Christian Günter and Benjamin Uphoff are ruled out through injury, while Manuel Gulde is a doubt due to illness. Nicolas Höfler remains suspended after being sent off against Dortmund on matchday four.

Augsburg

After taking just two points from their opening four games, Augsburg finally ended their wait for a win in last weekend’s home meeting with Mainz. Enrico Maaßen's side fought back from a goal down to win 2-1 courtesy of an Ermedin Demirović brace.

Augsburg, who occupy 14th place, are currently moved four points clear of the bottom three, and they will be hoping to extend that gap on Sunday. However, their recent away form suggests that claiming a positive result will be easier said than done. The Fuggerstädter have failed to win any of their last 15 Bundesliga away trips, while their last four away league games have all ended in defeat.

As a result, Augsburg will head to Europa-Stadion with the aspiration of winning their first away league game since beating Schalke 04 in October 2022. They are also looking to beat Freiburg for the first time since winning 4-1 on home turf in September 2018.

Raphael Framberger, Japhet Tanganga and Reece Oxford are all ruled out. Arne Engels will miss out through suspension, while Masaya Okugawa is a doubt due to a knee injury.
