Grifo stars as Freiburg see off Augsburg

Freiburg took on Augsburg to bring the Bundesliga’s Matchday 6 fixtures to an end. Separated by two points in the table, both Streich and Maassen’s teams have been treading water so far. It made for the perfect encounter for one to kick some life into their campaign, and so Freiburg did as they ran out 2-0 winners.

Freiburg made the perfect start to proceedings when arbiter Osmers awarded them a penalty. Iago clipped Sallai in the box and Grifo stepped up to convert. The Italian with his 50th Bundesliga goal in Freiburg colours.

All things considered it was a quiet half. Other than Tietz chance to equalise soon after Grifo’s goal, there was limited goalscoring opportunity. Atubolu forced Tietz wide and made the save required. Keitel’s injury when challenging Demirovic was the only negative for the hosts. Young midfielder Rohl replaced his compatriot.

Freiburg upped the ante as the hour approached, and their second goal eventually came. Lienhart rising highest in the box to convert Grifo’s corner. Finn Dahmen given no chance between the sticks for Augsburg, the centre-half’s header was too powerful. Augsburg talisman and ex-Freiburg man Demirovic ought to have reduced the deficit soon after but failed to do so.

Substitutes rolled on for Streich as he looked to close the game out. Grifo made way for Adamu, while Augsburg introduced Maier and Beljo. Maassen’s earlier substitute Michel appeared to half the deficit in the 80th minute. VAR cut short any celebrations when he was found offside. That’s how it would end – Freiburg securing all three points and rising to 8th in the table.
