Charles Aranguiz takes over as Leverkusen captain from Lars Bender

Lars Bender has resigned from his role as Bayer Leverkusen skipper. Charles Aranguiz takes over the responsibility.
Charles Aranguiz has been named new Bayer Leverkusen captain for the 2020/21 season, the Bundesliga club have announced on Friday.

The Chilean midfielder takes over the captain's armband from Lars Bender, the club's captain since the 2015/16 season, who has resigned from the responsibility due to his ongoing injury problems.

"I'm convinced that a captain belongs on the pitch and must play regularly. That wasn't always the case for me last season," said Bender and added:

"In the future, I want to concentrate on my duties as a 'normal' player and on my health."

Aranguiz, 31, has played for Leverkusen since 2015 and signed a new contract until 2023 in May.
