Multiple media sources reporting on the stalled deal reported that the swap stalled because of a contractual clause that entitled Matondo's former club Manchester City to make a matching offer in the event of the winger's departure from Gelsenkirchen.
Neither club released details about a potential purchase clause at the end of the season. Germany's Bild Zeitung recently suggested that there may be one in the neighborhood of €6 million.
Matondo moved from City to the Bundesliga in January 2019 for €9 million. He's scored two goals in 32 appearances over the past two years.
😎 The news you've all been waiting for.
