Kicker Report:
Christian Preußer leading candidate for Düsseldorf trainer position

It's been two days since Fortuna Düsseldorf announced that the expiring contract of head-coach Uwe Rösler would not be renewed. 

German footballing magazine Kicker reports that the front-runner for the open trainer position is SC Freiburg II trainer Christian Preußer.

There have certainly been bigger names linked with the now vacant F95 head-coaching position. Germany's preeminent footballing publication nevertheless reports that the likes of German footballing legend Miroslav Klose and former Hamburger SV and Bayer 04 Leverkusen interim trainer Hannes Wolf are not likely to be the next man to take charge of the Flingeraner.

Instead, virtually unknown Christian Preußer is thought to be the leading candidate. The 37-year-old began his coaching career at the Rot-Weiß-Erfurt youth academy aged just 27. Since 2016, he's coached the SC Freiburg reserves. Preußer has done an admirable job with the junior Breisgauer, who this year actually might attain promotion to the 3. Bundesliga.

In his current office, Preußer has garnered quite the reputation for developing young players. Düsseldorf have promising youngsters, like Shinta Appelkamp and Emmanuel Iyoha, who potentially stand on the precipice of major breakthroughs under the right stewardship. This is thought the be the reason he is being targeted by Klaus Allofs and the Fortuna board.

Kicker notes that confirmation of the appointment may take some time. The German Regionalligen were all suspended during the Bundesrepublik's second COVID lockdown in November 2020. As a result, the five fourth-tier divisions all still have much catching up to do before their campaigns can be concluded.

The Regionalliga Südwest, in which SC Freiburg II plays, will not conclude until June 12th. The club can still clinch promotion earlier, however. An announcement could come sometime next week.
