Max Kruse reaches for "Olympic Ring" following German victory over Saudis

The DFB XI captained by Max Kruse may not have turned in the most convincing performance on the pitch during their second group stage game against Saudi Arabia in the men's Olympic football tournament.

If information reported by Germany's main sporting tabloid is correct, however, the 33-year-old captain of the German national team succeeded in doing his own bit of convincing in a bizarre post-match interview.
Thanks to an assist from captain Max Kruse, Stefan Kuntz's German Olympic squad were able to obtain a much needed three points in their second Olympic fixture on Sunday. Prospects for the team appeared bleak in the 67th minute. Stuck level with opponents Saudi Arabia at 2-2, the squad found themselves reduced to ten-men after defender Amos Pieper was sent off on a straight red.

Ever enthusiastic skipper Kruse managed to fulfill his promise of a better result with a fine service off a corner in the 75th. Augsburg's Felix Udoukhai headed home to give die Nationalmannschaft a 3-2 lead that would not be relinquished. Kruse got his name on the scoresheet even though, the first thing he expressed in a post-match interview, he would have preferred to score a goal.

"I actually wanted to wait until I scored a goal, but who knows if that will happen?" a visibly nervous Kruse noted before removing his match tricot to reveal an undershirt with a message on it.

Kruse's tank top had a communique written in Turkish on it. The FC Union striker proceeded to take an imaginary ring out of his pocket, translate the message, and propose to his Turkish girlfriend in the live interview. According to Germany's Sport Bild, "Dilara" accepted the offer of matrimony.

Striker Ragnar Ache of Eintracht Frankfurt and Nadiem Amiri of Bayer 04 Leverkusen also scored in the victory. The Kuntz XI still must win their final group stage match against Cote d'Ivoire on Wednesday in order to advance to the knockout round.

At present, Germany sits in third place in the group on three points. Cote d'Ivoire and Brazil occupy the top two places, both on four points after one win and one draw.
