Reports: Augsburg test drive Frederik Winther while also eyeing Marco Friedl for defense

Bremen's well-sourced fan-site Deichstube.de reports that FC Augsburg are entertaining the idea of purchasing defender Marco Friedl.

The Bavarian Swabians most assuredly need some help at the back, but head coach Marcus Weinzierl hasn't ruled out riding with a Danish youth prospect.

The acute needs of FC Augsburg in defense have apparently led to renewed discussions about purchasing one of SV Werder Bremen's most valuable assets. Marco Friedl could still be sold. The former Bayern Academy product remains an expensive buy at an estimated market value of €7.5 million, but recent movement in the potential transfer of Kevin Danso to RC Lens may give Stefan Reuter and the Fuggerstädter enough cash to strike a deal.

Marcus Weinzierl's squad could certainly use a bit of extra help in central defense. Assuming Danso gets his sought after transfer, only the injured Reece Oxford and untested youngster Frederik Winther back up starters Felix Uduokhai and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw. Friedl can also play left-back.

Whether or not the FCA finds itself in the mood to pursue the expenditure may depend on Weinzierl's assessment of Winther in tomorrow's test match against Caligiuri. The club trainer is on record as saying that he has been pleased with the progress of the young Danish prospect.

"He's a bit slim, but very well defined," the Augsburg trainer said of Winther, "He holds his body up well in one-on-one situations. I trust him to play in the Bundesliga on sight. He just has to learn how to get accustomed to the pace. He's a talent that we'll spend a lot of time on."

The 20-year-old Winther was actually signed by Augsburg at the end of last autumn's transfer window. The Bundesliga side deemed it best to immediately loan him back out to former Danish side Lyngby Boldklub for further development. He officially arrived in Bavaria for this year's training camp.
