After just four months at Werder Bremen, Markus Pilawa has decided to immediately step away from his role of squad planner.
As Bremen officially announced on Wednesday afternoon, the 49-year-old requested the immediate termination of his contract.
The request to the Bremen management, led by sporting director Clemens Fritz, was granted on the grounds of personal reasons.
Internally, discussions are now underway regarding how to handle the suddenly vacant squad planner position.
“We deeply regret that Markus, an important member of our team, is leaving us,” Fritz said, speaking to local outlet DeichStube.
“Our collaboration was brief, but characterized by great trust and close communication,” he added, before wishing Pilawa good luck.
Last spring, Pilawa was the central and sole component of the restructuring of the sporting management at the Bundesliga club.
He also has a significant influence on the composition of the current squad this summer, including the return of Niclas Füllkrug.
At least, the relationship between the two sides is still considered strong, with Pilawa speaking after some “intense months” at the club.
“I thank the management for the trust they have placed in me and for their understanding of my decision, which was not easy for me,” he said.
