The Ivorian striker voiced his disappointment at the result, but remained confident ahead of the second-leg at Signal-Iduna Park.
"We can have a few regrets because the way we started the game was not the best, and we concede two easy goals. We need to learn from these mistakes.
"I think after the break Atlético dropped intensity. If you look at all the action, [the result] is quite deserved because they could have scored more [goals] from our mistakes. We also had a great chance at the end with Julian Brandt, but that is the game," Haller added.
Regarding his goal that halved the defecit on the night, Haller explained how it could still prove crucial in deciding the outcome of this quarter-final tie.
"It means a lot of positive things; its an important goal for hope. It also shows that anyone coming off the bench can make a difference. It's just nice to be back scoring for my team," added the 29-year-old.
When asked about how Dortmund will prepare for the return leg next Tuesday night, Haller laid out a clear statement of intent.
"Like always, we will play to win. Especially now the crowd will be with us [at home]. We have [to score] one goal to get extra-time at least, and we will do our best to get qualification," he concluded.
Dortmund will face Borussia Mönchengladbach this Saturday, before hosting Diego Simione's Atletico Madrid in the second-leg at 9.00pm (CET) on Tuesday, April 16th.
