2. Bundesliga: Magdeburg thrash St. Pauli 4-1 to move up to 4th in the table

1. FC Magdeburg strengthened their position in the upper reaches of the 2. Bundesliga table with an impressive 4-1 victory over FC St. Pauli at the Avnet Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts made a bright start and were rewarded for their early pressure in the 27th minute. Following a short corner routine involving Baris Atik and Alexander Nollenberger, Torben Müsel played the ball into the path of Mateusz Żukowski, who unleashed a powerful effort from distance into the top-right corner to give Magdeburg the lead.

St. Pauli struggled to find a response before the interval, with Magdeburg looking the more dangerous side. The visitors had opportunities of their own, but the hosts went into the break with a deserved advantage.

Magdeburg wasted little time extending their lead after the restart, with Anselmo García MacNulty making it 2-0 in the 48th minute. The defender found the net with a left-footed effort to put the hosts firmly in control.

However, St. Pauli responded ten minutes later when Eric Smith pulled one back in the 58th minute. The defender rose highest to head home Branimir Hrgota’s delivery, giving the visitors renewed hope of getting something from the encounter.

The visitors subsequently looked to build on their momentum, but Magdeburg remained organised and managed to keep their opponents at bay as the game entered its closing stages.

Any hopes of a St. Pauli comeback were ended in the 89th minute when Herbert Bockhorn restored Magdeburg’s two-goal advantage. Roko Simić then added further gloss to the scoreline with another late strike, completing a convincing 4-1 victory for the hosts.

The result represents another important three points for Petrik Sander’s side, who continue to establish themselves among the promotion contenders. St. Pauli, meanwhile, have now suffered consecutive league defeats following last weekend’s 3-1 loss to Nürnberg.
