Bayern Munich will be looking to return to winning ways when they host RB Leipzig in Saturday's Bundesliga Topspiel at the Allianz Arena. Vincent Kompany's side have been held to consecutive draws against Augsburg and Viking FK, while Leipzig arrive in Munich on the back of two successive victories.
With both teams among the Bundesliga's most prolific attacks, Saturday's encounter promises to be an exciting test for the reigning champions.
FC Bayern
Bayern Munich remain unbeaten across all competitions this season, but their recent results have raised some questions about their defensive stability. After a 2-2 draw against Augsburg last weekend, the Bavarians suffered a late equaliser in a dramatic 3-3 Champions League draw against Viking FK on Tuesday.
Kompany's side came from two goals behind to take the lead in Norway, only for Michael Olise's red card to change the complexion of the game before a 90th-minute equaliser denied them victory. Bayern have now drawn their last two matches and are still searching for their first win since the international break.
Despite their recent struggles, the Munich club can take confidence from their performances at the Allianz Arena. Bayern have won all three of their home matches in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 17 goals and conceding just once. Their most recent home outing ended in a commanding 7-0 victory over Union Berlin.
With an important Champions League clash against Arsenal approaching, Kompany will be eager to restore confidence and defensive composure. Bayern cannot afford another slow start against an opponent capable of exploiting their weaknesses.
Michael Olise could be particularly important on Saturday. The Frenchman will miss Bayern's upcoming European fixture through suspension following his rather silly red card against Viking, giving him additional motivation to deliver a strong performance against Leipzig.
Bayern also have a favourable recent record against their upcoming opponents. They have not lost a competitive match against Leipzig since August 2023 and have won their four most recent meetings. Maintaining that run would provide a timely boost ahead of their trip to London.
RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig travel to Munich with renewed confidence after securing consecutive victories against Eintracht Frankfurt and PSV Eindhoven. Martin Demichelis's team recorded a remarkable 6-0 Bundesliga win over Frankfurt before edging PSV 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The victory against the Dutch champions was particularly valuable after a difficult start to the campaign. Leipzig have struggled for consistency, alternating between convincing home performances and disappointing results away from home.
Demichelis's side currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga table with nine points, just two behind Bayern. A victory on Saturday would allow Leipzig to leapfrog the Bavarians and strengthen their position among the early contenders near the top of the table.
However, their away record remains a significant concern. Leipzig have lost all three of their away matches, which include losses against Bremen, Como and Leverkusen, since their 6-0 DFB-Pokal victory over Eintracht Trier in August. Turning that record around against one of Europe's strongest home sides will be a considerable challenge.
There are nevertheless reasons for optimism. Leipzig have demonstrated their attacking potential on multiple occasions, including a 5-0 victory over Hamburg and their recent six-goal performance against Frankfurt. Christopher Nkunku, who has scored four Bundesliga goals, will be a key figure in their attempt to trouble Bayern's struggling defence.
Team News
Bayern are expected to remain without Jamal Musiala, who is recovering from a thigh injury. Ismael Saibari could therefore continue in the number 10 role, with Olise and Luis Diaz operating behind Harry Kane.
Manuel Neuer is also a doubt after missing Thursday's training session due to a foot injury. Jonas Urbig could consequently retain his place in goal after starting against Viking FK.
Leipzig will be without Christoph Baumgartner and Assan Ouedraogo, who are recovering from hamstring and shoulder injuries respectively. Ezechiel Banzuzi and Neil El Aynaoui are expected to form the midfield double pivot in their absence.
Striker Marc Guiu is sidelined with a hamstring injury, meaning Romulo is likely to lead the line. Nkunku should provide support in attack as Leipzig look to take advantage of any defensive vulnerabilities.
