Jan-Niklas Beste has been linked with a return to the Bundesliga in recent weeks.
Sky Germany now reports that Borussia Mönchengladbach are considering a move for the winger, who left Heidenheim for Benfica last summer.
Initial talks are said to have taken place, with Beste seen as a possible replacement for Nathan Ngoumou, who could leave Borussia-Park this month.
At Gladbach, Beste could be reunited with Tim Kleindienst, with whom he played at Heidenheim.
RB Leipzig, meanwhile, are no longer pursuing Beste, according to Leipziger Volkszeitung.
Beste has started just five league games for Benfica since joining the Portuguese club for a reported €8 million fee last summer. His contract runs until 2029.
