Fans at the Voith-Arena were treated to the best of starts this evening, albeit not for fans of FC Heidenheim as the visitors surged into an early lead after 3 minutes. With the first move and shot of the game, Ridle Baku slipped it wide to Mohamed Amoura. The Algerian found Yannick Gerhardt on the edge of the box whose strike was somewhat tame, but Müller could only push it onto the post and from there into the net.

Maxi Arnold and Cedric Zesiger almost connected on a corner routine, however the Swiss centre-half failed to convert. Heidenheim looked to have levelled on the half-hour but Frank Schmidt's face said it all - an offside flag against Honsak who tapped in Mainka's rebound ultimately ruled it out. Wolfsburg could have extended their lead with a smart freekick as Vavro hit the post with a low drive. Although Scienza had a chance, Die Wölfe led 2-0 as a corner came back to Wimmer and pick out Dardai who flicked past Müller.

With Adrian Beck and Schimmer brought on for the hosts, Frank Schmidt's side adopted a more attacking approach. This eventually yielded some joy as Heidenheim managed to cut the deficit to a solitary goal just after the hour juncture in the game. A corner redirected by Mainka eventually fell kindly for Marvin Pieringer. Despite being strewn out on the ground, the striker managed to hook the ball to the net.

The red and blue clad side continued to push forward in hope and search of an equaliser, but playing on the counter suited Wolfsburg into the burning embers of the affair. Kevin Müller produced another fine parry to redirect Kevin Behrens' effort to safety. A final opportunity came Schöppner's way albeit Grbara denied the German. Eventually, the tie was put beyond doubt as Behrens fed Tiago Tomas to convert with a cool right-footed effort.
