A brace from Hyeon-Gyu Oh helped Beşiktaş secure all three points, rendering goals from Fisnik Asllani and Machida insufficient to rescue a disappointing Hoffenheim performance. European competition offered little respite for Ilzer and his side, who have now suffered defeats in both of their Europa League fixtures.
Hoffenheim created the game’s first major chance just three minutes in. Wouter Burger’s free-kick found its way back out to the left, where Bernardo recycled possession with another cross into the area. Machida met the delivery with a header but could only direct his effort agonisingly against the post, denying the hosts a dream start.
The game settled into a more sluggish contest following the lively opening, although Hoffenheim continued to fashion the better opportunities. Twenty minutes in, the ball fell to Adam Hložek on the right side of the area. Alexander Nübel rushed off his line, leaving the goal almost exposed, but the Czech forward could only find the side netting.
Beşiktaş came close to breaking the deadlock in first-half stoppage time. Junior Olaitan received the ball on the right side of the area before sending a low delivery across goal. Andrej Kramarić inadvertently redirected the ball towards his own goal, but it flashed across the goalmouth and stayed out, ensuring the sides went into the break level after an intriguing first half.
The visitors emerged for the second half with greater purpose and created two promising opportunities in quick succession around the hour mark, with Ilhan Fakili and Leandro Trossard both going close.
Their pressure eventually paid off on the hour mark. A quickly taken corner found Trossard, who advanced towards the penalty area with little resistance before finding Wilfred Ndidi. The midfielder’s backheel fortuitously picked out Michael Murillo, who found himself through on goal and calmly slotted home from close range to send the travelling Beşiktaş supporters into raptures.
However, Hoffenheim responded in style eight minutes later. Asllani collected the ball on the edge of the area and, rather than take one of the options available to him, drove towards goal himself before firing a low shot beyond Nübel to bring the hosts level at 1-1.
Just as Hoffenheim appeared to have regained their confidence, Beşiktaş struck a devastating blow. The visitors were allowed to counter far too easily, with Olaitan advancing down the left before picking out Oh with an outside-of-the-foot pass. Through one-on-one with Oliver Baumann, the forward kept his composure and slotted the ball into the corner to restore the visitors’ advantage.
Seven minutes later, Beşiktaş dealt another major blow to Hoffenheim’s hopes. Ilzer’s side were caught in possession once again, allowing the visitors to launch another counterattack. Fakili delivered an excellent ball into the area, where Oh slid in to turn it home and make it 3-1 with just over ten minutes remaining.
Hoffenheim refused to give up and set up a tense finish in the 88th minute. Vladimir Coufal delivered a corner into the area, finding Machida, who rose highest to head past Nübel and reduce the deficit to 3-2.
With four minutes of added time remaining, the hosts pushed for a dramatic equaliser but were unable to create another clear-cut opportunity. Beşiktaş held on to secure a 3-2 victory, leaving Hoffenheim to reflect on a second consecutive defeat in the Europa League and a fourth straight loss across all competitions.
