After two seasons in the Bundesliga, FC St. Pauli have been relegated from the German top flight following a 1-3 defeat to VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday.

For St. Pauli captain Jackson Irvine, finishing bottom of the table is a painful blow.

“I’m devastated that our Bundesliga journey is over. All the players who stay will work hard to get back to the level we’ve worked hard to reach," said Irvine in a post-match interview.

"My contract runs for another year and I’m staying. This is my home, this club is so special to me. We can consider ourselves fortunate to have fans like these, added the midfielder, who has played for St. Pauli since 2021.

"The support was outstanding even though we’ve gone down. It’s extraordinary. They’ve given us so much energy and pushed us all season. I’m sorry we didn’t deliver.

"If you finish where we did after 34 games, you deserve to go down, 26 points aren’t enough to stay in this league. We weren’t able to deliver in the key moments and the players have to take responsibility for that and the officials will also have to look at why we’re in the position we are.”
