Kimmich set to return to central midfield role for Bayern

After playing as a right-back under Thomas Tuchel in the latter part of the 2023/24 season, Joshua Kimmich is set to return to a central midfield role under Vincent Kompany.

Joshua Kimmich has mainly been playing as a right-back in 2024, not just for Bayern Munich, but for Germany as well.

However, it appears that Kimmich will return to his preferred central midfield role under new Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany, who deployed him there in Saturday's 3-2 friendly win over Tottenham.

"You plan something in advance. It was clear to us that Josh would end up back in the middle. We've been thinking about it," Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl told Bild.

"I've only trained and played in central midfield so far. That's the plan for now," Kimmich himself recently told Sky Germany.

"In general, [Vincent Kompany] knows, I know, we all know that I can play both positions. In the end, it's up to the coach to decide," he added.

With Kimmich playing in midfield, Josip Stanisic was used at the right-back position against Tottenham.
