Bayern Munich secured an impressive victory in the Spanish capital on Tuesday evening, with second-half goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer earning the Bavarians all three points.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, Laimer was delighted with Bayern's performance, particularly given the questions surrounding the squad in recent weeks.
"We went into the game knowing what we're capable of. There has been a lot written about us and everything surrounding the team, but we have big confidence in our squad and the players we have," the Austrian said.
"I think we showed that over the full 90 minutes today: the way we can play football and the way we want to play.
"Ultimately, I think we could even have scored a few more goals. It was a thoroughly deserved win against a good team."
Laimer also reserved special praise for 18-year-old Lennart Karl, who opened the scoring in the 54th minute after winning possession inside the Atléti penalty area.
"I'm really happy for the boy. He stays calm, he wants to improve, he works hard and today he was rewarded for it.
"He showed that real fighting spirit. He tracks back, wins the ball back and then somehow manages to smash it into the net.
"He's young and still has a lot to learn. He still needs to take another step forward, but he's on a fantastic path. I'm absolutely delighted for him, and I think he has a great career ahead of him."
Laimer then discussed his stunner in the second half, which came after an excellent pass from Harry Kane, revealing that his teammates had joked about how long he took to shoot.
"The boys asked me, 'Why did you take so long to shoot?' I thought I'd take a bit more time this time before doing something too quickly, as I sometimes do, only for it not to come off properly.
"Ultimately, Harry played an outstanding pass. I controlled it, looked up to see if there was anything else I could do, and then simply finished it with a clean, composed strike.
"Sometimes you can tell as soon as the ball leaves your foot whether it's going to be a good one or not. And I immediately thought, 'Oh, yes, that feels really good!'"
After getting back to winning ways in Europe, Bayern now turn their attention to Saturday's trip to Mainz, where they will be looking to go into the international break with three points under their belt.
