Niclas Füllkrug has been in spectacular form for Werder Bremen since returning to Germany on loan from West Ham United in the summer, leading the Bundesliga scoring charts with nine goals.

The 33-year-old’s performances have put him firmly in contention for a Germany recall under Jürgen Klopp, with Lothar Matthäus insisting that Füllkrug can't be overlooked for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Serbia and the Netherlands despite no longer being among the youngest players.

“I don’t believe that we should now rely exclusively on young players. We should select players who earn their place through strong performances on the pitch, regardless of their age," the Germany legend argued in a column for Sky Germany.

“We can't overlook someone like Niclas Füllkrug, who leads the Bundesliga scoring charts with nine goals. Other countries also have players who, at the age of 33, are still representing their national teams and featuring in World Cups and European Championships,” Matthäus added.

Jürgen Klopp is set to announce his squad for the upcoming games on Thursday.
