Julian Weigl is back in the Germany squad for the first time in five years, having earned a call-up to Hansi Flick's side for the upcoming friendlies against Israel and the Netherlands.

For the 26-year-old Benfica midfielder, the call from Germany coach Hansi Flick was a pleasant surprise.

"I could hardly believe it when I saw Hansi Flick's name on my display. I always hoped to get called up again. But I was still surprised. And extremely pleased," Weigl said, according to Kicker.

He now wants to make the most of his chance ahead of the World Cup later this year.

"I try to show every day that I'm an option for the World Cup squad, and that the coach can rely on me."
