Sebastian Hoeneß high-flying Stuttgart assumed control of the game from the get-go as they put their guests under extreme pressure. In fact, Mainz were somewhat lucky not to be a goal down in the opening minute. Deniz Undav, who overcame some fitness scares to start, fired the opening chance down Robin Zentner's throat.

Opportunities fell the way of both sides as the half-hour neared. Papela almost tapped in Ngankam's ball, while Karazor dragged a shot wide from range. While Chris Führich missed a guilt-edged chance, his misfortunes were spared by Maximilian Mittelstädt who capitalised on Stenzel's cross to make it 1-0. Stuttgart's lead doubled in am instant - their subsequent attack knocked beyond Zentner by Jamie Leweling.

Zentner was called upon once again after the restart. The towering German goalkeeper repelled Enzo Millot from point-blank range. Mainz were largely second best once more other than Leandro Barreiro's effort which tested Bredlow in the Stuttgart goal.

The game was finally put beyond doubt in the 74th minute. Deniz Undav shrugged off the attention of Tom Krauß. The German's confidence clear to see as he gave Zentner the eyes and tucked the ball inside his near post. Mainz did however manage to reduce Stuttgart's lead. Ludovic Ajorque knocking home Nadiem Amiri's freekick but any ideas of a comeback would be off the cards.
