The once rumored move of 21-year-old German central defender Luca Kilian to the cathedral city is gaining traction once again. Stephan von Nocks of German footballing magazine Kicker reports that Köln and Kilian's current club Mainz are close to concluding a loan deal.

It's unclear why talks of  loan-out stalled in the first place. Kilian--still an expensive investment for Mainz--appeared not to factor into the plans of Nullfünfter trainer Bo Svensson and Köln--after the sale of Sebastiaan Bornauw--needed additional reinforcements in central defense.

According to von Nocks, Kilian should be reunited with former head-coach Steffen Baumgart soon. It was Baumgart who built the youngster into a regular starter in the Bundesliga during the 2019/20 campaign. Mainz purchased the player for €2 million in the summer of 2020.
