When Borussia Mönchengladbach dismissed Gerardo Seoane as head coach last week, under-23 coach Eugen Polanski was appointed as interim boss "until further notice".

After Polanski guided his team to a 1-1 draw in a challenging first game on the road against Bayer Leverkusen, club boss Roland Virkus didn’t rule out the possibility of the 39-year-old taking the job permanently.

“The wording ‘until further notice’ remains, but again: in football, there are always dynamics – things can always develop,” Virkus said after the match.

According to Kicker, Gladbach’s management is fully convinced of Polanski’s qualities, with the 39-year-old considered their top candidate to replace Seoane long-term. But naturally, a permanent appointment would need to be justified by results.

Virkus stressed that financial considerations won’t factor into the decision.

“The coaching decision is one of the most important ones to make – I don’t care about the finances,” he said.
