While Borussia Dortmund remain hopeful of extending Nico Schlotterbeck's contract beyond 2027, the club’s managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, recently stated that there is no intention to impose a deadline for the centre-back to make a decision.
However, former BVB player Matthias Sammer, who now works as an advisor to the club, believes setting a deadline would be a sensible move.
“With Nico Schlotterbeck, you have to develop a sense of how far along the talks are. Accordingly, it may be that I would give myself a little more time,” Sammer told Sky.
“I have always looked at it from a sporting perspective. That’s why, in the past, I have often told the club: I know you want harmony and want to give him more time. You can do that, but I wouldn’t. Sometimes I would set deadlines.”
Schlotterbeck has been with Dortmund since 2022.
