Union Berlin vs. Borussia Dortmund preview: Free-scoring BVB head on the road
Serhou Guirassy | Borussia Dortmund |
Union Berlin
Bo Svensson made a promising start to his tenure as Union boss, with his first four matches producing two wins and two draws. Unfortunately for Svensson, his unbeaten start came to an end in last Saturday’s away clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach. Union looked set to take a point from the encounter until Tomáš Čvančara netted a 96th-minute winner to leave die Eisernen with nothing to show for their efforts.
After losing at Borussia-Park, Union are now set to return to the home comforts of the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, where they have won both of their matches this season. Union edged out St. Pauli by a 1-0 scoreline on matchday two, before they claimed a narrow 2-1 victory in their most recent home game against Hoffenheim.
They will hope to make full use of home advantage against Dortmund as they go in search of their first head-to-head win since October 2022.

Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund have produced a positive response to losing 5-1 in their most recent away match against Stuttgart. Nuri Şahin’s side fought back from two goals down to beat Bochum 4-2 in matchday five’s derby clash. Serhou Guirassy netted a brace alongside goals from Emre Can and Felix Nmecha to fire Dortmund to their third league win of the season.
Die Schwarzgelben went on to produce another free-scoring display in midweek, with Karim Adeyemi netting a hat-trick in a commanding Champions League win over Celtic. Guirassy also netted a brace, while Can and Nmecha grabbed a goal apiece to clinch a 7-1 home victory.
Dortmund will now head on their travels for the first time since that forgettable trip to Stuttgart. Saturday’s visitors are looking to end a four-game winless away run in the Bundesliga. While that run will not inspire confidence, Dortmund can draw inspiration from the fact they have won each of their last three games against Union.
Team News
The visitors are without the services of Tuesday’s hat-trick hero Adeyemi. The winger was forced off in the early stages of the second half with a hamstring injury and is now expected to be out of action until November. Julien Duranville replaced Adeyemi in midweek, but he also picked up an injury which will sideline him until next month. Adeyemi and Duranville are joined on the absentee list by fellow attacker Giovanni Reyna.
