The hosts made an electric start and needed just six minutes to take the lead. Berkan Taz picked out Christian Rasmussen on the left-hand side of the penalty area, with the Danish forward taking aim and firing a superb effort into the far corner beyond Hans Christian Bernat.
However, Karlsruhe responded almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Marvin Wanitzek teed up Kevin Wiethaup on the edge of the penalty area, and the midfielder produced an equally impressive finish into the top corner to restore parity.
Bochum subsequently enjoyed more possession and looked the more threatening side, with Karol Mets going closest to restoring their advantage. The defender was unable to convert from close range after Philipp Hofmann had nodded the ball into his path, while Jarne Steuckers also tested Bernat with a powerful effort from outside the box.
Despite the hosts’ pressure, Karlsruhe remained organised and managed to keep the score level heading into the interval.
The visitors made a flying start to the second half and took the lead just five minutes after the restart. Following a Bochum corner, Shio Fukuda helped keep the ball alive before Tim Civeja spotted Timo Horn off his line and produced a sensational strike from around the halfway line, sending the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net to make it 2-1.
Bochum responded almost immediately, however, with Hofmann bringing the hosts level in the 53rd minute. After Taz delivered the ball into the penalty area, Rasmussen helped it into the path of the former Karlsruhe striker, who made no mistake from close range.
Both sides subsequently searched for a winner, with Bochum coming particularly close through Taz and Hofmann in the 74th minute. Bernat initially parried Taz’s effort before producing an outstanding reaction save to deny Hofmann from the rebound.
The Karlsruhe goalkeeper continued to frustrate the hosts as the game entered its closing stages, while Bochum also had to remain alert to the visitors’ counter-attacking threat.
However, Uwe Rösler’s side eventually found their breakthrough in the second minute of stoppage time. After Mansour Ouro-Tagba drove forward down the left, Hofmann helped the ball back into the path of Taz, whose effort was saved by Bernat. The resulting attack remained alive, and Karol Mets delivered the decisive ball into the penalty area for Hofmann to finish from close range and complete a remarkable comeback.
The late winner sparked celebrations around the Vonovia Ruhrstadion, with Bochum claiming all three points in an entertaining five-goal encounter.
The victory continues Bochum’s recent improvement under Rösler, while Karlsruhe will be left frustrated after twice taking the lead and ultimately coming away empty-handed.
