The meeting presents an important opportunity for both sides to strengthen their positions in the 2. Bundesliga table as the season progresses. Bochum will be looking to make home advantage count, while Karlsruher SC travel to North Rhine-Westphalia hoping to come away with a positive result.

VfL Bochum

Bochum head into Sunday's encounter with renewed confidence after ending their difficult run of league form with a 2-1 victory away to Energie Cottbus last weekend.

Uwe Rösler's side had endured a five-game winless run in the league before travelling to Cottbus, but Christian Rasmussen's late winner secured three valuable points and lifted the club to 11th in the standings.

The victory was particularly important given Bochum's struggles in front of goal this season. Having scored just eight times in their opening ten league matches, they currently possess the lowest-scoring attack in the division. However, their recent cup victory over Mainz and the comeback success against Cottbus suggest that Rösler's team are beginning to find some momentum.

Rösler is nevertheless expecting a difficult afternoon against a Karlsruhe side whose intensity and attacking movement could cause problems. Speaking ahead of the fixture, the Bochum coach described Sunday's encounter as a potential 50-50 contest and warned that the visitors are one of the most intense teams in the division.

The German side will need to pay particular attention to Marvin Wanitzek, who Rösler identified as Karlsruhe's standout player, highlighting his ability to find space and influence matches through both open play and set-pieces.

Karlsruher SC

Karlsruher SC travel to Bochum looking to build on an encouraging 2-1 victory over 1. FC Heidenheim, which brought some much-needed stability to their start under new head coach Maximilian Senft.

The Baden-Württemberg outfit had endured a difficult spell before welcoming Heidenheim, having suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat away to Magdeburg immediately after an impressive 4-0 home victory against Darmstadt.

However, goals from Tim Civeja and Marvin Wanitzek secured a deserved victory over the recently-relegated side last weekend, with Wanitzek's superb free-kick proving decisive.

Despite that result, consistency remains a significant concern for Senft. Karlsruhe have collected 11 points from their opening ten league matches, leaving them level with Bochum, although their inferior goal difference places them two positions below Sunday's opponents.

Their away form is another area requiring improvement, with the visitors yet to record an away victory in the league this season, collecting just two points from their four matches on the road.

Senft acknowledged that his team must become more consistent when discussing their recent performances, explaining that the squad are still developing under his new tactical approach.

"We are coming out of the Heidenheim game strengthened, particularly because of the way we performed tactically and mentally," the Austrian coach explained. He also stressed his desire to deliver positive performances more frequently rather than continuing to experience such significant fluctuations.

Karlsruhe will therefore be hoping that last weekend's victory can provide the platform for a more convincing away performance, particularly against a Bochum side who have also struggled to find consistency this season.

Head-to-head record

Historically, Bochum have enjoyed the better of this fixture, recording 23 victories compared to Karlsruhe's 16 across 64 competitive meetings, with the remaining 25 encounters ending in draws.

However, the more recent record at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion offers encouragement for the visitors. Karlsruhe have avoided defeat on each of their last six visits to Bochum, who have not beaten them at home since a 1-0 victory in May 2014.

Interestingly, 13 of the 24 meetings between the sides in the 2. Bundesliga have ended in draws, highlighting how closely contested this fixture has traditionally been.

The previous meeting came on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign, when Bochum claimed a 2-1 away victory thanks to Moritz-Broni Kwarteng's winning goal.

Team news

Bochum will be without several players for Sunday's encounter, with Enis Cokaj, Jean Manuel Mbom and Oliver Olsen having returned to training but not yet being available for selection.

Babis Drakas and Philipp Strompf are also not ready to return, while Berkan Taz missed one training session earlier in the week. However, Rösler confirmed that the remainder of his squad had completed full training.

The Bochum coach also suggested that changes could be made to his attacking partnership, with Philipp Hofmann having played a significant number of minutes recently. Charlie Patiño and Jarne Steuckers are among those pushing for starting opportunities following encouraging substitute appearances.

Karlsruhe, meanwhile, will again be without defensive regulars Marcel Franke and Sebastian Jung, who are both unavailable through injury.

New signing Héliton has completed his first full week of training since the previous international break, although Senft indicated that he is more likely to be considered for a brief appearance rather than a starting role.

Paul Scholl is consequently expected to retain his place in the back three after impressing during the 2-1 victory over Heidenheim, while Tim Civeja will also hope to keep his place following his first goal in the second division.

Predicted lineups

VfL Bochum (4-2-3-1): Horn; Klaiber, Steinwender, Mets, Wittek; Pannewig, Meyer; Taz, Rasmussen, Miyoshi; Hofmann

Karlsruher SC (3-4-2-1): Bernat; Kobald, Scholl, Trémoulet; Pinto Pedrosa, Väänänen, Civeja, Ofli; Wiethaup, Wanitzek; Fukuda
