For FC Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany, the meeting with Borussia Dortmund stands apart from the rest of the campaign.
“Der Klassiker is its own competition,” Kompany said pre-match. “You don’t win a title, but you win something important. We want to enjoy that. This feeling of a derby is always something very special. It’s great to be here in Dortmund.”
The Belgian emphasised both the emotional magnitude of the fixture and Bayern’s readiness to embrace it. Despite Dortmund’s recent setback in the Champions League against Atalanta, Kompany expects a fired-up opponent.
“I expect a big reaction from Dortmund after their defeat against Atalanta. But we must not underestimate that we are also going fully into this game - with focus and energy.”
Clear plan for Musiala
Kompany also addressed squad management, particularly regarding Jamal Musiala. “We are constantly in dialogue with Jamal. We have a plan for him and he can still play a big role today, but in the second half.”
Instead, Bayern’s attacking quartet of Serge Gnabry, Harry Kane, Luis Díaz and Michael Olise gets the nod from the start. “The boys in the starting eleven have already scored many goals this season and are in good form. Today they get the chance again.”
Experience, Kompany stressed, is not lacking within his squad. Now it is about translating that composure into intensity on the pitch.
In a match that carries pride as much as points, Bayern’s message is clear: embrace the occasion, expect a battle, and meet it head-on.
