Germany forward Kai Havertz gave Arsenal an early lead in Saturday’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, but couldn't prevent his side from losing on penalties after Ousmane Dembélé’s equaliser.

“We can be proud of the season. We won the league, but of course you’re a bit down right after the game,” Havertz told Sky after the defeat.

“In the end, it turned out the way it did. You have to accept it. Next year we’ll try again,” he added.

The former Bayer Leverkusen forward is now looking forward with “huge excitement” to joining up with his Germany teammates ahead of the World Cup in a couple of days.

“I’ve already watched a few videos of the guys on YouTube. I can’t wait to join up with them. Now I’ll take another day or two off and then it starts on Tuesday,” he said.

In the first of two warm-up friendlies, Germany take on Finland on Sunday without Havertz.
