Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after collapsing during a training session last Friday. The Belgian has been diagnosed with meningeal irritation and will continue his recovery at home, with assistant coach Aaron Danks set to remain in charge of the team for the time being.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the news in an interview with German broadcaster ARD ahead of Wednesday's DFB-Pokal clash against 1. FC Magdeburg.

"He is doing very well considering the circumstances, although I wouldn't say he is already feeling very well. But he was discharged from hospital today. I think that is the biggest and best news for us," Eberl said.

The 40-year-old had been suffering from a viral infection in the weeks leading up to the incident. Despite his illness, Kompany remained on the touchline for Bayern's Champions League clash against Arsenal before collapsing during a training session with the club's reserve team last Friday.

Asked when Kompany could return to his position, Eberl made it clear that the decision would depend on medical advice.

"When the doctors say he can return, I am very sure he will also say that he is ready. But he will be given all the time he needs. We have always said that, which is why we spoke about weeks from the beginning," Eberl said.

Bayern's next major target could be their Bundesliga home match against 1. FC Köln on November 22, following the international break. However, no specific return date has been confirmed, with the club prioritising Kompany's full recovery.
