Matthäus compares Alonso's Leverkusen to Guardiola's Barcelona

Lothar Matthäus sees similarities between Pep Guardiola's legendary Barcelona team and Xabi Alonso's title-winning Bayer Leverkusen side.

Lothar Matthäus has sung the praises of Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen team after they wrapped up the Bundesliga title with a commanding 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday.

"Leverkusen have had a perfect season so far," Matthäus told Sky Germany of Leverkusen, who have now gone 43 games unbeaten.

"I am impressed by the superiority, quality, conviction and naturalness with which coach Xabi Alonso's team has performed.

“I have rarely seen a team have a season like this. Such absolute dominance, not just in terms of results, has only been achieved by FC Bayern under Pep Guardiola.”

Speaking of Guardiola, Matthäus added that he sees similarities between the Barcelona team the Spanish coach led between 2008 and 2012 and Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen side.

“It reminds me a bit of Barcelona with Messi, Iniesta and Xavi in terms of their style of play: high possession, quick passing and one-touch football are also Bayer 04's strengths.”
