Hrubesch nominates Minge to take Oberdorf's place on Olympic roster

German women's national team trainer Horst Hrubesch has confirmed his replacement for the injured Lena Oberdorf at the upcoming Women's Olympic tournament.

The replacement for the injured Lena Oberdorf on the German women's national team roster at the upcoming Olympic tournament has been confirmed. On Saturday, Bundestrainer Horst Hrubesch selected new VfL Wolfsburg signing Janina Minge. The 25-year-old was among five players eligible for selection during the recent European championship qualifiers, yet not on the 18-player Olympic roster.

Minge's rising form for her previous club SC Freiburg led to her earning her first international call-up under previous Bundestrainerin Martina Voss-Teckelenburg in November of 2023. She would make her senior level debut in February, scoring her first goal in the final pre-tournament warm-up friendly prior to last Summer's World Cup in June. Voss-Teckelenburg brought her down under for the competition, but she was not used.

She's earned three more caps over the past 12 months, most recently starting alongside Oberdorf in the 4-0 win over Austria and playing the full 90 minutes. Minge scored nine goals for Freiburg in the 2022/23 season. This year, largely due to the fact that she was forced to deputize in central defense, the Lindau native notched only three tallies in 22 Frauen Bundesliga appearances.
