Darmstadt vs. Augsburg preview: The Lilies badly need three points

On Saturday afternoon, Augsburg travel to Darmstadt, who are rock bottom of the Bundesliga table and are running out of time.

A goal from Julian Justvan earned Darmstadt a point last week against a decent Bremen side, but they’re now 16 games without a win in league play. They’ve struggled defensively all season long, but it looks like Torsten Lieberknecht is staying in charge until the end of the season.

Sebastian Polter and Tim Skarke will likely continue in a makeshift front two with Zimmerman, Gjasula and Maglica in a back three. Darmstadt still remain on the search for their 3rd win of the campaign.

Lieberknecht commented, "We have the feeling that we are close. We are delivering good performances - even against in-form teams like Stuttgart or now Bremen. But, perhaps we need a better performance and even more intensity to get the reward."

Fraser Hornby, Braydon Manu, Fabian Nürnberger, Matthias Bader, Clemens Riedel and Marvin Mehlem are all likely out with injuries.

Augsburg ended a run of disappointing results with a massive comeback win against Freiburg on Matchday 23. They’ve been far more interesting to watch under Jess Thorup and have a very good chance of finishing in the top half of the table.

Ermedin Demirovic has been the key to much of their creativity in attack, as he’s totaled 12 goals and 7 assists in the league this season. Augsburg should like their chances against a struggling Darmstadt defense this Saturday afternoon.

Thorup said, "We have to build on our performance against Freiburg, then three points will be possible in Darmstadt. We know what awaits us, but we are primarily looking at ourselves. We have to play our own game.”

Mads Pedersen is suspended and Patric Pfeiffer is out with an injury. Reece Oxford and Raphael Framberger are both expected to remain out.
