After consistently being one of Borussia Dortmund's best layers in the first half of the season, Julian Brandt has struggled to maintain his form since the turn of the year.

A big factor behind the 27-year-old's dip in form was a tough spell with illness in January that took its toll on him.

"The only way out was to the toilet - and that was difficult," Brandt told the Ruhr Nachrichten, revealing that he lost six kilos during his two weeks in bed.

"I really don't want to hide behind it, but it wasn't easy," added the former Leverkusen player, who has needed some time to return to full fitness.

"You're missing the feeling on the pitch, the rhythm, the right decisions - that's how it felt for me," added Brandt, who feels there's still room for improvement.

"It can certainly get better. I'm ambitious enough to want to take a step or two forward in the next few games," the midfielder said self-critically.
