The German media outlet claims that the 29-year-old has suffered a setback in his recovery from the foot injury that has kept him out for months.
Stambouli is out of contract at the end of the season, and it's doubtful if the 29-year-old's deal will be extended, meaning he may not get to represent Schalke again.
According to Bild, the 29-year-old would have to take a pay cut to stay as Schalke can no longer afford his annual salary of €4 million.
Stambouli hasn't been on the pitch since the end of October.
