VfB Stuttgart are a side full of contradictions

A tale of two halves as Stuttgart sit on the top of the away table and bottom of the home table, as Bundesliga nears the ends of the season’s first half.
As match day 15 ended with VfB Stuttgart knocking in four goals against a helpless Augsburg at the WWK Arena and the Bundesliga season nearing the end of its first half, VfB Stuttgart’s away record this season has been impressive.

Speaking to Bundesliga TV on the team’s away record this season, he said: “You know, there’s not much of a difference between home and away matches because there are no fans in stadiums.

“The only difference is you sleep in a hotel. Maybe we need to start sleeping in hotels when we play at home. We need to think about that.

Die Roten hold the first place at the top of the away table with eight matches played away from home, scoring 17 points in the process – out of a possible 24. Five wins, two draws and one loss on the road.

Bayer Leverkusen possess the same record and are behind a close second, except Die Werkself trail by 2 goals on goal difference. Stuttgart have scored 21 goals on the road, three more than Bayern Munich and six more than Borussia Dortmund.

Pellegrino Matarazzo’s men are Bundesliga’s joint strongest team on the road, but their home record has been disastrous. They have been unable to record a victory all season at the Mercedes-Benz-Arena, drawing four and losing three out of a total seven matches.

Their only wins at the home stadium have come this season in 1-0 victories over 1. FC Heidenheim, who currently sit in 10th place in the 2. Bundesliga, and Freiburg, in a friendly and DFB Pokal respectively.

Stuttgart currently have 21 points out of a possible 45 and sit in 10th place in the Bundesliga rankings, two above 11th placed Augsburg. Bayern Munich sit at the top of the table with 33 points, with RB Leipzig and Leverkusen trailing with 31 and 29 points respectively.
