Kicker Report: Martin Schmidt linked with Swiss national trainer position

With it looking increasingly likely that Switzerland national team head-coach Vladimir Petkovic will vacate his position after seven years on the job, three Bundesliga trainers have reportedly been approached about replacing him.

According to German footballing magazine Kicker, Swiss natives Lucien Favre and Urs Fischer have already turned the FA of their home country down.

Naters native Martin Schmidt, on the other hand, may be persuaded to take charge of La Nati.
It's only been 16 months since Martin Schmidt left the sidelines. Following his dismissal from Augsburg last Spring, Christian Heidel brought the 54-year-old back to Mainz; albeit this time on a new career trajectory as a front office man.

Mainz's current sporting director has made statements to the effect that he prefers his management job to the stresses of training a squad and even declared his coaching career over. A chance to lead his country from the sidelines, however, may be too good an opportunity to pass up.

Swiss national team trainer Vladimir Petkovic has reportedly tired of his position. The man who has led La Nati since 2014 has been linked with a move to FC Girondins de Bordeaux in Ligue 1.

"Vladimir Petkovic is still the trainer," Schmidt emphasized when asked about the rumors by Kicker journalists embedded with the Mainzer camp, "I don't want to get involved in speculation."
